HMS Academics

HMS ACADEMICS

Horizon Middle School is committed to inspiring and empowering every student to make a positive impact on the world. This commitment is reflected in the school's Building Goals, which are aligned with the Kearney Public Schools Strategic Plan and centered on three key areas: Academic Achievement, College and Career Readiness, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).

Our academic goal is for every student to demonstrate at least one year's growth as measured by MAP assessments. We also strive to prepare students for future success by increasing their awareness of career pathways and helping them develop essential leadership and life skills through the Leader in Me framework. These skills—including responsibility, kindness, teamwork, accountability, and effective communication—equip students to thrive both in and beyond the classroom.

A strong sense of belonging is fostered through our daily Homeroom advisory program, where students build meaningful relationships with trusted adults, strengthen connections with peers, and develop confidence, character, and self-worth. Our team-based instructional model further supports student success by providing a consistent group of teachers who collaborate to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of every learner.

In addition to a rigorous core curriculum, students participate in a variety of Exploratory courses that encourage creativity, leadership, critical thinking, and the discovery of new interests through engaging, hands-on learning experiences. Horizon also provides specialized programming to ensure every student has the support needed to succeed. Life Skills and Resource Level II programs offer individualized instruction for students with verified disabilities, emphasizing academic growth, independence, functional life skills, and successful transitions. Student Support Services, including Learning Strategies, provide targeted instruction, accommodations, and personalized support to help students achieve success in a variety of learning environments.

HONOR ROLL

Horizon Middle School Honor Roll is calculated for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders each nine-week period (Term). Students earning a grade of D, F, N, U, or Incomplete in any class will not qualify for honor roll.

Honor Roll students will be recognized at two levels:
