HMS ACADEMICS
Horizon Middle School is dedicated to inspiring and empowering students to make a positive impact on the world. The school's mission is reflected in its core Building Goals, which align with the Kearney Public Schools District Strategic Plan. These goals focus on Academics, College and Career Readiness, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). The school aims for all students to demonstrate at least one year’s growth in academics through MAP assessments, prepare for future success with knowledge of career clusters, and develop essential soft skills like kindness and teamwork through the Second Step SEL curriculum.
To foster a supportive learning environment, Homeroom serves as a daily advisor/advisee program where students build positive relationships and develop self-worth. Additionally, Teaming ensures students work with a consistent group of teachers who collaborate to provide a structured and enriched educational experience.
Beyond core academics, students engage in Exploratory courses, which provide hands-on experiences that promote leadership, creativity, and personal growth. Life Skills and Resource Level II classes are tailored for students with verified disabilities, offering individualized support in academics, self-help, and transition skills. Student Support Services, including Learning Strategies, provide specialized instruction and accommodations to help students succeed in a variety of educational settings.
